Education & Experience
Dr. D. Ravi Kumar is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Delhi and presently, the Head of Central Workshop. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University College of Engineering, JNTU Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh in first class with distinction in 1988. He completed his M.Tech. from Regional Engineering College, Warangal (Now, NIT Warangal) in 1991. He obtained his Ph. D. from IIT Madras in 1996. Dr. Ravi Kumar joined IIT Delhi as a faculty in Mechanical Engineering in 1999. He became Associate Professor in 2006 and Professor in 2011. He was a Humboldt Research Fellow at the Institute for Metal Forming Technology, University of Stuttgart, Germany in 2008 and University of Erlangen, Germany in 2013. He was a visiting faculty at the University of Waterloo, Canada in 2005-06. Before joining IIT Delhi, he worked as an Assistant Manager in Tata Steel (R&D), Jamshedpur during 1996-1998 where he won the Best R&D project award in Tata Steel for the year 1997-98.
Teaching & Research
Dr. Ravi Kumar teaches core and elective courses in Manufacturing area at IIT Delhi. He has been teaching Manufacturing Processes-I, Metal Forming and Press Tools and Product Realization by Manufacturing at undergraduate level and Metal Forming Analysis and Metal Forming Technology at the graduate level for students of Production Engineering. He received the institute “Teaching Excellence Award” in the year 2011-12. Dr. Ravi Kumar is the first recipient of J.M. Mahajan award for the “Outstanding Young Teacher in Mechanical Engg.” in 2008. He taught a full course on “Metal Forming” for postgraduate students of Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia by video conferencing in 2009. He was Chairman, Grades and Registration for 4 years during 2012-16. Dr. Ravi Kumar’s research interests include Metal Forming, Plasticity and Materials Processing. His specific research has been focused mainly on Sheet Metal Forming and Finite Element Modeling and Analysis. He has guided 13 Ph. D. students and another 6 students are currently pursuing Ph.D. under his guidance. He has also supervised 39 M.Tech. students in their thesis work. He has published over 100 research papers in journals and conferences worldwide.
Projects & Collaborations
Dr. Ravi Kumar has carried out sponsored research projects funded by DST, ISRO and DRDO as Principal Investigator and consultancy projects sponsored by Tata Steel, Cessna India, John Deere and Tube Investments of India Ltd. He is a presently a co-Principal Investigator of the Indo-German project “Multistage Modeling, Simulation and Optimization for Energy, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing” with University of Erlangen-Nuremberg under Indo-German Partnership in Higher Education funded by UGC-DAAD. As a part of this project, he organized Indo-German Seminars on “Recent Advances in Sheet Metal Forming” in 2017 and 2020. Dr. Ravi Kumar is a member of the Editorial Board of Production Engineering Journal (Springer). He is an active member of Sheet Metal Forming Research Association (SMFRA) founded at IIT Bombay. He is a member of the Board of Governors, National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology Ranchi.
