About the Abhiyan

Swadeshi Urja Evam Khad Aatmnirbharta Abhiyan is a landmark joint initiative led by IIT Delhi in collaboration with Swadeshi Shodh Sansthan, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Biogas Forum India and Gau Seva Aayog, Uttar Pradesh.

The programme aims to install one lakh (1,00,000) biogas plants across Uttar Pradesh, making it India's largest state-level biogas deployment initiative. Each plant will produce clean cooking fuel (biogas) and organic fertilizer (bioslurry) for farming communities.

The initiative directly supports the Government of India's vision of Aatmnirbhar Bharat by reducing dependence on imported LPG, chemical fertilizers and fossil fuels through indigenous renewable energy solutions.

Role of IIT Delhi & Prof. V.K. Vijay

Prof. Virendra Kumar Vijay, as National Coordinator of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan and Head of the Biogas Development and Training Centre (BDTC) at IIT Delhi, is leading the technical and policy coordination for this initiative.

IIT Delhi's BDTC brings decades of expertise in biogas plant design, installation, training and quality monitoring. The team has already licensed its biogas upgradation technology to 11 industries and multiple gaushalas across the country.

The initiative builds on the success of the Gaushala-Based CBG Model developed at IIT Delhi, which transforms gaushalas into self-sustaining green energy hubs producing both CBG fuel and organic biofertilizer.

Key Objectives of the Abhiyan

Install 1,00,000 biogas plants across Uttar Pradesh for rural energy self-sufficiency

Reduce dependence on imported LPG for cooking fuel in rural households

Replace chemical fertilizers with organic biofertilizer from biogas slurry

Strengthen Gaushalas as green energy production centres across UP

Generate employment and rural entrepreneurship through biogas sector

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve waste management in villages

Support the Government of India's SATAT scheme for CBG production

Create a replicable model for other states to achieve energy and fertilizer sovereignty

The book was launched by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at the IFGE (Indian Federation of Green Energy) Conference at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi. It is a comprehensive resource covering CBG production processes, upgradation technologies, vehicle applications and policy frameworks.
