Prof. Virendra Kumar Vijay is one of the most acclaimed and internationally recognised professors in the field of biogas technology and rural development. He is a Professor at the Centre for Rural Development and Technology (CRDT), Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, and serves as the National Coordinator of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Prof. Vijay pioneered the concept of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, a transformational programme adopted by the Ministry of Education, GoI in 2014, which aims to create a virtuous cycle between society and higher educational institutions by leveraging academic knowledge, voluntary organisations and government resources to support holistic rural development. Under his leadership, the programme now connects thousands of educational institutions across India with rural villages.

He holds a patent on small-scale biogas upgradation and bottling technology, which has been licensed to 11 industries and numerous gaushalas across the country. His team at IIT Delhi has been operating India's first biogas-powered car for over 15 years, covering more than 1,50,000 km entirely on upgraded biogas. The performance data generated from this initiative formed the scientific basis for the Bureau of Indian Standards biomethane specification IS:16087, published in 2013.

Prof. Vijay is a Fellow of the Institution of Safety Engineers (FISAE) and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (FIE). He is a Member of the Board of Governors of IIT Bhilai Chhattisgarh (Since 2018 - till date) and serves as the General Secretary of Biogas Forum India (BiGFIN) since 2009. He is a Former Member of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), MoS&T, Govt. of India (2021-2024), Former Member of the Academic Committee of the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, Kerala (2020-2024), and Former Member of the Academic Committee of MCEME, Secunderabad (2022-2025). He is also a Former Member of the Technical Expert Committee under the National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP), ICAR, World Bank Sponsored (2018-2023).
